Freedom Trail Cyclist Bridge

Akron, OH

Status: Design Completed 2021

Architect |Structural Engineer: Endrestudio
Landscape Architect: MKSK Landscape Architecture

The Freedom Trail Cyclist Bridge is a critical node within the Freedom Trail Phase 4 Alignment. As the southern linkage between the Shared Use Trail and the side path connection to the Towpath Trail, the bridge demarcates the transition from dedicated trail to urban condition. Its location near the iconic MTA bus terminal and its traverse of the heavily trafficked South Broadway Street make this an important gateway and signboard for cyclists, pedestrians, and vehicles.

The bridge was designed to be iconic on a budget while providing unique, engaging, and comfortable user experience. Endrestudio approached this project with a focus on creating a highly efficient structure out of standard steel elements, streamlining the path, minimizing ground and siteworks, and leveraging every element for maximum visual impact and user experience.
